Steve Heller's Fabulous Furniture
Wrenchosaurus

One day in 1998 I came to work at Fabulous Furniture and there were three 5 gallon pails, full of 25/32" open end wrenches just sitting in front of the store. There were about 600 of them. So much of this was funny to me--- that they were a size that no one ever uses, that someone just left them for me without a note, that i wanted them!

I started dreaming of the Wrenchosaurus that night. I was in the middle of making my first Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby car out of an old go-cart. I started working on the wrench sculpture and then one night it struck me--- ditch the go cart, put wheels on the wrenchosaurus. I'd figure out how to steer it and stop it as i got closer to the race.

The first Wrenchosaurus was made with 100 of those wrenches--- those wrenches seemed so precious to me that I was hoarding the rest. When i raced it down that hill, the crowd went wild. I got my first 1st place win.

Then in 2002 I realized that the Wrenchosaurus needed 400 more wrenches, a two-tone paint job, and--- to be a self-respecting dragon--- fire shooting out of its mouth. This time when I went down the hill, people were speechless. Again I won 1st place.

For the 2010 Soapbox Derby, I repainted the Wrenchosaurus once again and gave him chrome headers and exhaust pipes. When I got there, I was told that this would be the last soapbox derby. I was asked to be the final person down the hill. The Wrenchosaurus rode proudly, fire shooting, head held high.
