Steve Heller's Fabulous Furniture
The Rocket Car

After the Wrenchosuarus, I realized that I had raised the bar for the Kingston Artist's Soapbox Derby so high that I had to vault over it myself.

I started thinking about a "real" car for the Derby. I had once bought a 1958 Caddy in Albany, and it was just sitting behind the shop at Fabulous Furniture, so I dragged it out and imagined a'58 Cadillac Bonneville Streamliner (you have any idea what I'm talking about?).

Anyway, I stared slicing and dicing, welding and hammering, adding a windshield made from the vent windows, a red telephone (that dials directly to the white house!), and a double rocket engine that shoots 6 foot flames out the rear.

I couldn't get the real paint job done in time for the Derby, so I raced it in primer with red flames. It won first place. But I knew it deserved more, so the next year I gave it it's deluxe flame job.

It was later used by the New York Times in a fashion photo shoot with SNL star Chris Kattan
